5 Cities on the Cheap

Prague, Melbourne, Singapore, Budapest, Rio de Janeiro are all expensive and alluring in their own way. Yet, there are ways to work around the costs and still have a fabulous time cruising down river in Budapest or simply getting lost in the magical streets of Rio.

I will tell you how!

01. Budapest

Budapest is a city of endless experiences, but if you have just a day or two to spare in the country’s capital, here’s what you should definitely do!

Begin your first day that brings together all the beautiful buildings with a free self-guided walking or cycling tour.

Try Triptobudapest’s free walking tour, they start daily at about 10:30 in the morning, and it takes you on a visual journey of Budapest’s history from the Jewish quarters to the dominating Parliament building.

Alternatively, you can cycle around the beautiful Danube river and explore both the cities of Buda and Pest.

Evening, take a Cruise on the river Danube or explore the nightlife that the Pest side has to offer.

 

Good to Know:-

  • Where to stay:- Green Bridge Hostel is an enduring building on a narrow street 1 block from the Danube River, this unassuming hostel is a 7-minute walk from the nearest metro station and 4 km from Buda Castle.

  • If you happen to buy a bus ticket to take the public transportation, remember to punch in as soon as you board the bus, as there is a constant check and there is a heavy fine, if not done so.

  • You can get cheap drinks at the hostels even if you aren't staying there, including beer for € 2

02. Singapore

Singaporeans have their own delicious version of the bread-butter-eggs or their , you must start your day with a helping or simply just gorge on the ever so popular Kaya Toast. Spend the day by immersing yourself in the beauty and serenity of Singapore's Hindu and Chinese Temple. The Mariamman Temple in Chinatown is definitely my favourite and worth a visit.

Evening, My favorite thing to do is to relax and watch a free movie screening or performance at Esplanade- Theatres on the Bay.

Unleash your inner shopaholic with a visit to the the Haji Lane, where you can not only shop for clothes but for quirky home accessories.

 

Good to Know:-

  • Where to stay:- Rucksack Inn @ Lavender Street with its beautiful terrace, friendly neighborhood and a beautiful pool, you would never want to leave the place.

  • Restaurants at Little India offer the cheapest meal options.

  • You can explore Singapore's best walking trails for free at the Southern Ridges which spans across Mt faber and Kent Ridge.

03. Melbourne

Melbourne abounds with history, culture and street art, much of which is free to take in. Get a taste of Melbourne's urban history in the northern neighborhoods of Clifton Hill and see some of the most iconic industrial landmarks. If you are interested in  Political engagement, then visit the Parliament house and watch the Politicians debate whilst taking a tour through its wooden interiors. Melbourne is known to be blessed with one of the most beautiful parks, so while you are here, take a stroll through its vast Royal Botanic Gardens, featuring thousands of plants from Australia and the rest of the world across its 100 acres.Take a break from all the art and history with a stroll down St Kilda Beach and Brighton Beach, both located along Philip Bay.

  • Where to stay:- Space hostel is a traveler's hostel where luxury meets budget. This chic, stylish boutique youth hostel is in the heart of Melbourne city – a space designed for comfort and enjoyment.

  • Use the city Circle Tram to tour the city with informative commentary.

  • Visit a bar every evening to discover city's penchant love for live music. Bars like The Retreat in the suburb of Brunswick is known for its free gigs.

04. Prague

This city is at its atmospheric best no matter when to visit. With a plethora of flight options like Luftansa, Turkish Airlines, Swiss, Emirates etc into the city, it really thrives on tourism. Begin your day by visiting the old town which is a mix of medieval buildings presided over by a Gothic tower with a splendid Astronomical Clock. This clock is known to have an intriguing symbolism. Be among the many who gather on the hour to watch the clock in action-the 45- second performance. 

 

Good to Know:-

  • Where to stay:- The Czech Inn calls itself a hostel, but the boutique label wouldn't be out of place.

  • If you are visiting Prague in May, make sure to check out the Prague Spring and the classical music festival. 

  • With its array of jazz bands, buskers, caricature artists and postcard sellers, Charles bridge has a lively mix of free entertainment.

05. Rio DE Janeirio

When I think of Rio, the first thing that comes to my mind is a 'Handsome' City. A city which gives you the adrenaline rush as soon as you step in.

The gateway to both Brazil's beach country and the grand Christ the Redeemer, the city embodies a laid-back vibe that conceals a heart of thrills and adventure.

With its history, charming beaches, raucous Carnaval festival and sprawling favelas there is not a moment to get bored- You won't know where to start — or when to stop. Start by exploring the city's artistic side in Lapa or by hiking the Tijuca forest.

 

Good to Know:-

  • Where to stay:- Che Lagarto Hostel; This hostel is known to host one of the best parties in town plus the loaction is outstanding. Its just about 2 km from Ipanema and Copacabana beach.

  • Brazil is full of natural wonders; visit one of the public parks like the Parque Lage which has been featured in many international music videos or simply stroll on the infamous Copacabana beach. 

  • Dont miss the Centro Cultural Banco, sponsored by the Bank of Brazil, this wonderful art museum is one of the most beautiful art-deco building there is.
